The TCIA welcomes  Ven. Ngawang Kherrab Bhutia

We are very pleased to welcome Ven. Ngawang Kherrab Bhutia to Arkansas!

Ngawang became a novice monk under the blessing of His Eminence Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche, the Supreme head of Druk Thupten Sangag Choling Monastery in Darjeeling, India. During his time there, he studied rituals, ceremony, music, and meditation under many different teachers. He also completed a Three Year and Three Month Meditation under the instruction and guidance of H.E. Gyaltsen Tulku Rinpoche, a renowned meditation master of Bhutan.

Ngawang will be very involved in the stupa construction project. Say “Tashi Delek” to him at the stupa planning meeting on March 17th!

Tara Retreat
Saturday, December 15th, 2018

Tara is a completely enlightened Buddha who had previously promised to appear, after enlightenment, in the form of a female bodhisattva and goddess for the benefit of all beings. Her primary activity is to protect from the eight fears. Tara, the goddess of protection and compassion, is one of the widest worshiped deities in Tibet. Tara represents the miraculous activities of all buddhas. In myth she is born from Chenrezig’s tears of compassion. There are innumerable manifestations of Tara arising according to needs, such as the dynamic Green Tara who quickly overcomes obstacles and saves beings in dangerous situations. While cultivating the wish that all our endeavors ultimately benefit others, we can call upon the power of Tara to get things done in a most amazing way. Whether you are looking for the right partner in a relationship or wishing to find the conditions for entering into a life of solitary retreat, the practice of Tara can help.

Asian Studies Talk by Dr. Benno Weiner
Old Main 523
Friday, February 23 11:30-1:00
Students and other Faculty
Unforgivable Crimes and Empty Stomachs: Rebellion, Repression and Famine in Northeast Tibet (Amdo), 1958-1961

When in 1949 the Chinese Communist Party “Liberated” the multi-cultural borderland known to Tibetans as Amdo, rather than immediately implement socialist reforms, it followed a moderate policy intended to “gradually,” “voluntarily” and “organically” integrate the region into the new People’s Republic of China. At the outset of 1958’s Great Leap Forward, however, these policies were jettisoned in favor of rapid collectivization. This led to large-scale rebellion, overwhelming state repression, and widespread famine. In this talk, Dr. Weiner discusses 1958’s Amdo Rebellion and explores how the violence of 1958 and its aftermath continues to cloud the state’s efforts to integrate Tibetans into the modern Chinese nation.
