Encouragement to Adopt a Nonsectarian Outlook
“Buddha, the
greatest of spiritual friends, gave the most appropriate instructions to
each and every being throughout space. His collected discourse is, as
you might image, as deep as the ocean – very difficult to fathom.” – Shabkar Tsogdruk Rangdrol
As many of you know, the Rime Center is a non-sectarian Dharma Center; established that way by our founders Lama Chuck and Mary Stanford. Their vision for the Rime Center was of a place where people could come together to learn about Buddhism and find a refuge for the nurturing of inner peace, kindness, community understanding and world peace. Sangha Social – Nelson Atkins Museum |
This Mother’s Day bring Mom and the
whole family to join the Rime Sangha as we visit the Nelson Atkins
Museum of Art and see their new exhibit, Teachers of Enlightenment: Traditions in Tibetan Buddhism. We will be meeting at the Museum at 1 pm.
Beginning with the historical Buddha who founded the tradition of Buddhism over 2,500 years ago, the teacher has occupied a central role within Buddhism. Teachers (gurus) serve as instructors for their students and are venerated by practitioners. |
Within Vajrayana Buddhism, an
esoteric form of Buddhism practiced in Tibet, the teacher is essential
to guiding a student’s path to enlightenment. Specialized teachings,
rituals, and practices are taught that can only be passed directly from a
spiritually advanced teacher to an individual practitioner.
Works of art are key to disseminating the Buddhist tradition and actively used by students and teachers for worship. Sculptures and paintings (thangkas) depicting individual teachers serve as a focus for prayer and contemplation in Buddhist monasteries. Read more… |
